History
Gold played a big part in the growth of many of the towns in New South Wales including Avoca. The settlement was first formed as a sheep farming area around 1850. Due to the gold rush, the population of Avoca rapidly increased between 1853 and 1854 from only 100 to 16,000 people.
As the gold rush died down many of those who had come into the area took up agriculture. Thanks to developments in farm engineering the area then became a prosperous rural community. A reservoir was built in 1911 and by the end of the twentieth-century tourism and wine had become major economic factors in the area.
