Avalon is a suburb of Victoria with an estimated population of 3,700. It is situated north-east of Geelong and on the northern shore of Corio Bay.

History

A man called James Austin once owned a large area of land in Avalon. He returned to England in 1859 to buy the ruins of Glastonbury Abbey. It was the burial site of King Arthur. While he was away, his nephews managed his Avalon homestead.

The property was destroyed by a fire in 1880. The name is taken from the Isle of Avalon, the site where King Arthur recovered from his final battle.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Avalon is best known for its Avalon Airport. It is home to the airline Jetstar Airways and the Avalon International Airshow. The airshow is the largest of its kind in Australia. The area is hoping to soon open a Direct Factory Outlets shopping centre.

You can find the Avalon Raceway is the area, which is a dirt track racing venue. Some people call it Avalon Speedway.
