Ascot is a suburb located 7km from Brisbane’s central business district. It has a population of over 5,700, and is well regarded for its many gorgeous old buildings.

History

Once home to the Turrbal clan, Ascot grew popular with Europeans thanks to its proximity to the Brisbane River. Due to Brisbane’s love of horseracing, the suburb gained its name from the famous English racecourse.
During the Second World War, Ascot proved to be a useful spot for the Allied forces. It housed several American units, and served as an HQ for the Central Bureau until 1942.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Ascot’s Heritage-listed sites include Musket Villa, Chateau Nous, and Eagle Farm Racecourse. Horses remain a big draw, with both Eagle Farm and Doomben Racecourse active throughout the year. Ascot is also known for Racecourse Road, a high-end shopping district framed by Poinciana trees.
