Altona is 13km south-west of Melbourne’s CBD. It is a part of the local government area of the City of Hobsons Bay. The area has a mix of residential and industrial developments including petrochemicals. The region has a population of almost 10,000 people.

History

Before settlers arrived in the area it was the home of the Kurung-Jang-Balluk people. It was named by a German who came from Altona in Hamburg. The population in the area grew thanks to coal mining but this industry ended in 1930.
The Post Office opened in January of 1918 and there was a large growth in the area’s population after the Second World War.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There are many parks, gardens, and conservation areas in Altona. There is also a promenade area along the bay. Places of interest include Kororoit Creek, Cherry Lake, Altona Coastal Park, and the Truganina Coastal Parklands.

The area has several schools and the Altona College. The area also hosts the Altona Festival and it is home to several sports teams including an Australian Rules football team. Transport is provided by 3 railway stations, local buses, and there is a coastal cycle and walkers trail too.
