Westbury is a town in the central north of Tasmania, 30km west of Launceston on the Bass Highway. It’s the headquarters of the Meander Valley Council and has a population of around 1,500.

History

In 1823, the site was first surveyed. In 1828, the town was laid out by the Van Diemen’s Land Company and in the 1830s, it developed as a garrison village.

In 1832, troops were stationed in Westbury and were barracked around a village green in the centre of town. The village green is still in use and is said to be the only traditional village green in Australia. In 1832, Westbury Post Office opened.

Westbury is located within a 2-hour drive of most tourist attractions in north and northwest Tasmania. It is also home to many heritage building and beautiful scenery.

Westbury also hosts the St Patrick’s Festival, an annual event celebrating Westbury’s links with its early Irish community.
