West Moonah is a Hobart suburb. It’s located 8.7km north-east of the city’s central business district, and has a population of more than 3,700. West Moonah is largely residential, and forms part of the City of Glenorchy local government area.

History

It might not be obvious now, but West Moonah wasn’t always the leafy slice of sleepy suburbia it is today. The area was once known as Springfield, and was the subject of a grand plan to craft a fabulous garden estate. The First World War and the Great Depression soon scuppered that, and Springfield remained little more than a cut-off mud pit right up until the 1960s.

Residential development finally began at this point, and the modern-day West Moonah was born.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

West Moonah is known for its lush parks and strong transport links to the rest of Hobart. Its neighbouring suburbs, such Glenorchy and Lenah Valley, contain various shops, cinemas, libraries and sports facilities. West Moonah has two schools, one public and one private.
