Triabunna is a town on Tasmania’s east coast. It forms part of the Glamorgan Spring Bay Council local government area, and has a population of more than 900. Triabunna is one of the region’s biggest towns, second only to St Helens.

History

The name “Triabunna” comes from an Aboriginal word that refers to the Tasmanian native hen. The town’s origins lie in 1830, when it was founded as an army base for the 63rd regiment. It was simply known as Spring Bay back then, until the name of the post office was changed to Triabunna in 1881.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Perched comfortably in Spring Bay, Triabunna is a popular spot for diving, swimming and surfing. It’s also a great fishing area, and boasts many top-notch fish and chip shops. Triabunna is known for the Tasmanian Seafarers Memorial. This commemorates the lives of all Tasmanian seafarers lost to the ocean, as well as anyone else who perished in the waters around Tasmania. A service is held every year to honour the dead and update the memorial plaques.
