Welcome to Taroona, TAS

Taroona is a major residential suburb in Tasmania and part of the municipality of Kingborough. A 15-minute drive from the centre of Hobart, it has a population of over 3,000.

History

The traditional owners of the land were the Mouheneener people. It takes its name from the Aboriginal word meaning sea-shell.

Then known as Crayfish Point, the first Europeans came to the area in the early 1800s. During the century, the land was mostly used for farming and was sparsely populated.

Clarendon James Cox bought an 18-acre property which he called Taroona in the mid-1890s.

Large residences were built in the first half of the 20th century. Taroona Post Office opened in 1906.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

South of the suburb is one of Tasmania’s strangest historical buildings, the Shot Tower. Climbing the tower gives visitors a great view of the Derwent Estuary. The Truganini Reserve is close to the suburb.
