Welcome to St Helens, TAS
With a population of 1,500, St Helens is the biggest town on Tasmania’s north-east coast. It lies on the Tasman Highway about 160km east of Launceston.
History
St Helens started out as a whaling base in the early years of the 19th century. In the 1870s tin was discovered in the region and St Helens became an important port for the mines. After the mine’s closure, many of the miners moved to the small settlement and it became a thriving fishing town.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
St Helens is the “Game Fishing Capital of Tasmania“. But its white sand beaches and the fresh sea air do not only attract anglers but also tourists, who want to get away from it all. It is a great base for exploring the natural highlights of the north-east coast. Head to the Mt Victoria Forest Reserve and visit the 90-metre high St Columba Falls. Or watch the local wildlife at St Helens Important Bird Area.
