The town of Sorell is situated on the Tasman Highway north-east of Hobart and it is named after William Sorell. He was the third Lieutenant-Governor of Van Diemen’s Land. The area was the centre of an important farming region and market town with a population of almost 2,500 people.

History

When the Sorell Causeway was opened in 1872, it reduced the distance that needed to be travelled into Cambridge via the existing road. The Post Office in Sorell opened in 1832 on June 1st. The area was officially named Sorell in 1808.
