Sheffield has a population of 1,397 according to the 2006 census. It is 23km inland from Devonport in Tasmania.

History

Englishman Edward Curr, in honour of his hometown, derived the area’s name. It was settled in 1859 by English explorers and developed at a slow pace.

In 1963, Sheffield grew quickly with the announcement of the Mersey-Forth Power Development Scheme. Its population decreased a decade later when the power scheme was completed.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Sheffield has enjoyed renewed relevance, as it is now known as the “Town of Murals”. In a bid to rescue it from ruin, over 60 murals have been painted in Sheffield since 1986. This has proved to be a popular tourist attraction.

The International Mural Art Festival has been held in Sheffield annually since 2003.

Sheffield holds much natural beauty in the form of Roland Dam, Lake Barrington, and Devils Gate Dam.
