Sandy Bay is a suburb of the Tasmanian city of Hobart. It sits to the south of the city’s central business district. The suburb has a population of 11,332. It is one of Hobart’s most prestigious areas.

History

Norfolk Islanders were forced to move to Van Diemen’s Land in 1808. They were granted most of the land that is now Sandy Bay. The suburb takes its name from the long sandy beach.

This beach was one of Tasmania’s first horseracing venues. Unusually, organisers had to consider the tides when scheduling races. Large crowds arrived to watch the races. The Wrest Point Hotel Casino opened in 1973. It was Australia’s first legal casino.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Today, Sandy Bay is the home of the University of Tasmania’s Hobart campus. Hundreds of students live in nearby accommodation. Residents and visitors continue to enjoy the Wrest Point Hotel Casino.
