Ross is a historic residential town in the Midlands of Tasmania. It’s located on the Macquarie River, 78km south of Launceston. It’s listed on the Register of the National Estate and has a population of 272.

History

The Aboriginal people of the Stony Creek Nation traditionally own the area.

Charles Grimes was the first European explorer to pass through the area in 1811. He named the area Ross, after a Scottish esquire. Later that year, a timber bridge was built over the river, making Ross an important stopover between Launceston and Hobart. It quickly became a trade centre. By 1901, it was a fine wool growing district.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Many of the town’s buildings are heritage-listed. This includes the Female Factory, a female convict compound. Another highlight is the Ross Bridge, which was constructed out of sandstone in 1836.
