Penguin is a seaside town on the north-west coast of Tasmania, in the Central Coast Council local government area. It sits on the Bass Highway. It is located 17km east of Burnie and 128km north-west of Launceston. Penguin is home to a population of 3924.

History

In 1861, Penguin was settled as a timber town. Its township was established officially on 25 October, 1875.
Botanist Ronald Campbell Gunn gave the town its name after the penguin rookeries that can be seen along Tasmania’s north-west coast.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Penguin is home to Tasmania’s largest undercover markets. It is held every Sunday and has been running for more than two decades. More than 100 stalls offer vintage and secondhand items.
