New Town is a suburb of Hobart. It’s located in the inner part of the city, just 4km from the central business district. It’s part of the City of Hobart local government area, and has a population of more than 6,000.

History

One of Hobart’s oldest suburbs, New Town was first established on the Derwent River in 1804. Early buildings include the Pitt Farm, which still exists as one of Australia’s farmhouses. Various architects worked on New Town as it blossomed over the decades, which brought a range of styles to its streets. Amongst others, Federation, Italianate and art deco buildings line the tree-heavy streets.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

New Town is a real foodie hotspot, with the famous Jackman & McRoss serving up some of the best pies in Tasmania. Other restaurants in the area offer everything from modern Australian to Asian fusion. Nature fans can embark upon the New Town Rivulet Track, which starts where the Rivulet meets the Derwent and follows the former upstream.
