New Norfolk is a Tasmanian town on the banks of the Derwent River. It has about 5,500 inhabitants and lies less than 30km north-west of Hobart.

History

The region now known as New Norfolk was once inhabited by the indigenous Leenowwenne tribe. The first settlers arrived in the early years of the 19th century. They were mostly farmers who relocated from Norfolk Island.

After 1848, the Irish nationalist Terence MacManus spent several years of his exile in New Norfolk. You can still find his house “Kilburn Grange” here today.

New Norfolk is a modern town that is proud of its pioneer heritage. It is home to some interesting buildings including the historical church St. Matthews and one of the oldest hotels in Australia – The Bush Inn.

It is also a great base camp for everyone wanting to explore the Derwent Valley. You can easily reach Mt Field and Lake Pedder.
