Mowbray is a suburb located 3km from Launceston in Tasmania in the City of Launceston local government area. Containing the minor suburbs of Mowbray Heights and Vermont, it has a population of over 3,750.

History

Mowbray is located on a flat-topped alluvial shelf which is known as Mowbray Hill.

It gets its name from an early homestead property which was formerly located within what is now the Launceston Church Grammar School. This homestead property was owned and named by Martin Mowbray Stephenson. Mowbray Racecourse was a big part of this property and racing meets have taken place there since as early as 1830.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The suburb is home to Mowbray Racecourse which hosts the Launceston Cup, a horse race which is run over a distance of 2400 meters and is part of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival. It is one of the state’s main yearly social events.
