Moonah is a suburb in Tasmania’s capital city, Hobart. It is located 5km north of the city’s central business district. Moonah sits north of the inner city suburb New Town. It has a population of 5126.

History

The Muwinina people were the original inhabitants of the area. It used to be the home of large orchards. Migrant families began to relocate to Moonah from around the 1950s onwards. It was popular for its affordable housing, factory work and location close to the city.

Moonah and its neighbouring suburb New Town were originally lands granted for free to settlers.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Moonah hosts the biggest undercover farmer’s markets in the state. Island Farmer’s Markets offers organic fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and local wine and olive products.
