Margate is a small seaside town with a population of more than 1300. It is surrounded by attractive scenery including vineyards and grazing fields, and it is a popular stop-off point for those travelling on to Bruny Island.

History

An expedition arrived in the area in 1792 and charted the coastline, naming features including the large channel North West Bay. Many aborigines were seen in the area by this and future exploratory parties.

Large steamers carried supplies to the area through Margate during the 1800s. By the late 1860s a post office and primary school had opened.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

In 2016 a week-long celebration was held in Margate to mark 150 years since it was gazetted.

Today’s visitors can take advantage of the attractive local countryside and wide range of shops and parks.
