Legana is a small rural town in northern Tasmania, in the West Tamar municipality. It has a growing community and a total population of 3,678 people. More than 84 per cent of people were born in Australia.

History

The name Legana derives from the Aboriginal word meaning “fresh water”. The town marks the point where fresh water starts on the Tamar River. A homestead on Nobelius Drive is named “Fresh Water”. It was nearby a private jetty where the local indigenous did business with the early white settlers. This homestead now runs as a bed and breakfast lodge.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Legana has many sporting clubs, including the Legana Cricket Club and the Legana Tennis Club.

There is a shopping centre in the area which has a supermarket and other shops. Legana has gone through development recently. It now has many amenities and new shops to serve the local community.
