Latrobe is a town in northern Tasmania on the Mersey River. 8km southeast of Devonport of the Bass Highway, it’s the main centre of the Latrobe Council. It has a population of around 4,000.

History

In 1826, the area was first settled by B.B. Thomas. In 1861, the settlement was named after the administrator of the colony of Tasmania, Charles Joseph Latrobe. In 1860, La Trobe Post Office opened. It was renamed Latrobe Post Office in 1873.

Latrobe is home to the Mersey Community Hospital. A 100-bed hospital, it provides many services. These include an ambulance service, general surgery, limited rehabilitation services, and allied health support.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The main shopping district is located along Gilbert Street. It features a number of restaurants, hotels, cafes, and shops, including a Supa IGA. It’s also home to the Australian Axemans Hall of Fame and the Big Platypus, which is one of Australia’s big things.
