Kingston is a small town located 12km south of the Hobart city centre. It has a population of 11,200 and is one of the fastest growing regions of Tasmania.

History

Kingston was settled in 1808 by Thomas Lucas and his family. It was proclaimed a township in 1851.

Many post-war immigrants moved to Kingston after the 1950s. It has strong ties to the Dutch community and its sister city is Grootegast in the Netherlands. It was named best Australian suburb for families by Aussie Home Loans.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Kingston comprises many suburban estates including Blackmans Bay and Kingston Beach. Most of the population work in the city but live in surrounding areas.

The national headquarters of the Australian Antarctic Division is located in Kingston. The suburb has two major shopping centres. These are the Kingston Town Shopping Centre and Channel Court Shopping Centre.
