Invermay is a suburb in Launceston. It has a population of over 3,000 and lies on the Tamar River and the North Esk River. Invermay is the closest suburb to the north of Launceston’s Central Business District.

History

Established in the 1880s, Invermay has experienced several floods. In 1929, a major flood left more than 4,000 people homeless. In 2016, the Tamar River flooded and left most of Invermay underwater.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Invermay is known as the home of York Park, a large sports stadium that is also known as the University of Tasmania Stadium. Formerly known as the Aurora Stadium, York Park is famous for its Aussie Rules football matches. The most popular match happened in 2006, when Hawthorn played against Richmond in AFL.

Tourists can take advantage of the many cultural attractions in the area. These include the Tramway museum, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, The Powerhouse Gallery, and ArtSpace.
