The city of Hobart in the island state of Tasmania and is the least populated state capital in the country. It was set up as a penal colony in 1803 and it is the second oldest capital city after Sydney. The area is believed to have been the home of native Australians for 35,000 years before to the arrival of foreign settlers. The population is 221,000 people.
History
The first settlers lived in an area on the eastern shore of the Derwent River. They later moved to a more suitable area now known as Sullivans Cove. There were some violent clashes between the settlers and the native people of the Mouheneener tribe. The natives also suffered devastation through contracting western diseases to which they had no natural defence.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
The city’s Federation Concert Hall is the home of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. Located on the waterfront, the venue provides an all year program of events. The Theatre Royal situated in the town is the oldest theatre in Australia.
Hobart has many sporting teams including 2 rugby league teams. Basketball, netball, and hockey are also well represented by teams from the city. There are several schools and colleges in the city and transport is well served by Metro Tasmania and a modern road network.
