Hadspen is an Australian residential suburb on the South Esk River in the north of Tasmania. Most of the town’s buildings are residential and it has a population of about 2,000.

History

Hadspen was officially declared in 1866.

The town has heritage-listed properties and others from colonial times. The town’s historic centrepiece is Entally House, built in 1819 as a wealthy settler’s colonial estate. It was the family home of Thomas Reibey, Premier of Tasmania from 1876 to 1877. The Red Feather Inn was built in the 1840s and remains in use as a restaurant and for accommodation.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Tourists can visit the town’s many historical buildings, including a convict prison and the Uniting Church, which is more than 150 years old. The local Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd took over 90 years to build. The town has a small shopping centre but is mostly residential.
