Based in Tasmania, Glenorchy is a large suburb in the northern region of Greater Hobart. According to the 2011 census, it has a population of 10,534. It falls under the federal division of of Denison.

History

Land grants in the Glenorchy area began in 1804. By the 1820s, it was occupied by farms and used as a rural retreat from Hobart. It was used especially for orchards.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

There are many sporting facilities in Glenorchy. These include an outdoor swimming pool, a football oval, a soccer pitch, and a bowls club. There is also a racecourse and an open-air auditorium in Tolosa Park.

There is a large retail sector in Glenorchy. The three major indoor shopping centres are Northgate Shopping Centre, Glenorchy Plaza and Glenorchy Central.
