With a population of over 6,900, George Town is a large town in Tasmania. George Town sits in the north of the state, on the Tamar River.

History

George Town takes its name from King George III. Colonel William Paterson settled the town in 1804. This makes George Town one of the oldest European settlements in Australia. George Town’s first occupants were a female factory, a military station, and a few early settlers.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

George Town is popular with tourists who want to swim, surf, fish, or boat. This seaside town is also home to a colony of Little Blue Penguins and Fairy Penguins. You can see these penguins at the beach at Low Head.

George Town also boasts many sporting teams. The most well-known sports clubs are the George Town Football Club, George Town Bowls Club, and George Town Cricket Club.
