Based in Tasmania’s South, Geeveston is a small town that sits on the Huon River. It lies 62km south-west of Hobart. According to the 2011 census, Geeveston has a population of over 1,400 people.

History

Geeveston is named after an English settler called William Geeves. Lady Jane Franklin gave Geeves a land grant, and he established a settlement. In 1861, this settlement acquired the name of Geeves Town. The area changed its name to Geeveston in following years. In 1876, the town opened its first post office.

In 1962, Geeveston opened a pulp mill. Until the plant closed in 1982, this was the town’s largest employer.
