The City of Devonport is located at the mouth of the Mersey River close to the airport. There is a drive on and off freight link between Devonport, Melbourne, and King Island. The town has around 30,000 inhabitants.

History

There were originally 2 settlements of Formby and Torquay on opposite banks of the river. A river ferry service connected them and the two became united as Devonport in 1890 following a public vote. In April of 1981, Prince Charles of Wales declared Devonport a city. After operating for over 160 years the ferry service was discontinued in 2014.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

A cinema, restaurants, cafes and a selection of shops are situated in the area’s CBD on the west side of the river. The Devonport Entertainment and Convention Centre hold local theatre productions and conventions.
There is a cultural museum and the Bass Strait Maritime Centre is housed in what was once the home of the harbourmaster.

The town has a modern hospital, a railway museum, and vibrant nightlife venues. The city has great transport links including a passenger ferry, buses, and the railway.
