Claremont is a suburb of Hobart. It’s part of the City of Glenorchy local government area, found within the Greater Hobart area. Claremont is located 14km south-east of the central business district, and has a population of more than 7,700.

History

Claremont dates back to 1930, when Henry Bilton constructed Claremont House. The ensuring suburb was named for the house, and remained largely undeveloped until the 1960s. A great deal of public housing was built over the next two decades, along with schools, churches and a shopping centre.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Claremont is mainly residential, but enjoys access to several popular facilities. The Claremont Golf Club sits on the eastern tip of the suburb, protruding into the Derwent River. The suburb also has its own Australian rules football team (Claremont Football Club) and soccer team (Metro Claremont), who both compete in local leagues. The suburb features several parks, as well as a good selection of shops.
