History
Bicheno is named after James Ebenezer Bicheno, the British Colonial Secretary of Van Diemen’s Land (what many Europeans used to refer to Tasmania before 1856).
In 1848, coal was found in the area. The harbour was subsequently used to load and export the coal. But most of the local residents left the area in 1855 after the discovery of gold in Victoria. Fishing became the main industry of the district.
