History

Austins Ferry is named after James Austin and his cousin John Earl. Both men were taken to Port Phillip as convicts in 1803. After their sentences ended, they worked to create ferry service between New Norfolk and Hobart. This brought money to the area due to the location and convenience of said water transport. Since then the area is has developed mostly with housing projects.
