Set in the tranquil valley of the Bungala River, Yankalilla is a rural town on the Fleurieu Peninsula, SA. Located 72km south of Adelaide, it has a small population of 319.
History
Once inhabited by the Ramindjeri people, the first European settlement began during the 1830s. The land was used to grow wheat and barley. Between the 1850s and 1870s, the town thrived and a jetty was built on the coast to export wheat grown in this area.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Yankalilla attracts thousands of pilgrims to the town. In August 1994, an image of the Virgin Mary reportedly appeared on the wall of the Anglican church in Yankalilla. Since the press release of this story, pilgrims have flocked to this church from all over the world.

Wheat continues to be important for the town’s economy, as is dairy farming and tourism. Yankalilla offers a variety of retail outlets, restaurants and quality bed and breakfast properties.
The impressive skate ramp and BMX track at Lions Park is a favourite with the local youth. The town also has several sports teams including football, netball, tennis and hockey teams.
