Welcome to Waikerie, SA
Waikerie is a rural town on the shores of the Murray River. It is part of the Riverland region and lies about 170km northeast of Adelaide. In 2006, Waikerie had a population of 1,750 people.
History
There are several theories as to how Waikerie got its name. One says that it comes from the indigenous word “wei kari” meaning “many wings”. That’s because after heavy rain, a lot of ghost moths emerge from their hideouts in the trees by the river.
But not only the animals take to the air. In 1974 the small town hosted the World Gliding Championship.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Due to the flat dry terrain around Waikerie, the thermals are ideal for gliding. The local gliding club meets regularly at Waikerie Airport.
The area is also famous for its many citrus plantations. The fruit grow well here because Waikerie has even more sunshine hours than the Sunshine Coast.
