Stepney is a small triangular suburb of Adelaide in the City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters. 3km from Adelaide, it has a population of over 850.

History

Stepney has largely been a working class suburb for much of its history. Today, however, Stepney is home to a lot of light industry.

The suburb was named by George Muller after an inner-city district in Tower Hamlets, a borough in London, England. He previously lived in the borough and created the Village of Stepney in 1850. He also built the Maid and Magpie Hotel in the suburb.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The most famous landmark in Stepney is the junction that is formed by the merging of Magill and Payneham Roads with Fullarton Road, Baliol Street, and North Terrace. It’s biggest retail hub is the Avenues Shopping Centre.
