Spalding is a rural town located to the north of the Clare Valley in South Australia. At the 2011 census, the recorded population was just 212 people.
History
It is believed that Spalding takes its name from an English market town, also called Spalding, in the County of Lincolnshire.
The town was officially established in 1885, though a post office wasn’t opened until 1925. Prior to 1869, there were several sheep runs in the area and a farming community was built around them when more land was made available.

Spalding is a small town built which relies on its farming industry. There are only a few facilities and services available. These include a supermarket, hotel, post office and police station.
Local landmarks include the heritage-listed Spalding Railway Bridge and the Bundaleer Reservoir. For adventurers, the Heysen Trail runs past Spalding with the town located at the halfway point of its astonishing 1200km length.
