Semaphore is a suburb. It is located 14km north-west of Adelaide city centre. It is on the LeFevre Peninsula. It has a population of 2,832 according to the 2006 census.

History

In 1856 a government-owned signal station opened in Semaphore. This documented ships in the area as well as information about the water such as tides. In 1875, the Time Ball Tower was built nearby. In 1859 a bridge was built to connect the area to Port Adelaide. In 1860 a jetty was made.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The beach at Semaphore is very popular. To help with this, there are a number of large car parks available for people visiting. It is a good place to swim, but the waves are not generally good enough for surfing.

The jetty is a nice place to stroll. Several festivals are also based around the jetty area. For film lovers, there is a small cinema in Semaphore.
