Welcome to Roxby Downs, SA
Roxby Downs is a mining town in the Southern Australian Desert. It has a population of 4,000 although this fluctuates with mining activity. It lies 560km north of Adelaide.
History
A relatively new town, Roxby Downs was built in 1987. It was purpose-built to service the Olympic Dam mine and processing plant. This mine is one of the biggest in the world.
Roxby Downs became a town on 5 November 1988. Residents celebrated the ‘opening’ with a town party sponsored by the Olympic Dam’s owners.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Roxby Downs has one of the youngest populations in the country. Nearly one-third of residents are under the age of fifteen. The town’s amenities are geared towards family living and the younger generation. These include a cinema, schools, many sporting facilities and a cultural precinct.
The town is unique as it is the first joint venture between a government and a business. Mine owners BHP Billiton (formerly WMC) provide the infrastructure for the town including housing, water and electricity. The state government provide schools, recreation facilities and policing.
