The small City of Port Augusta is a bustling seaport and railway junction located the Spencer Gulf’s east coast. Up until 2016, the area generated electricity through burning locally mined brown coal. The City has a population of over 14,000 people.

History

The location for Port Augusta was selected by Alexander Elder and John Grainger in 1852 due to it being in the form of a natural harbour. The Port city takes its name from Augusta Sophia, Lady Young who was the wife of the then Governor of South Australia.

When the town became the southern terminus for the proposed north-south line to Darwin in 1878 the area began to see rapid growth.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Much of the area’s economy today is boosted by tourism and a growing trend towards the eco industry. The Pichi Richi Railway and the Wadlata Outback Centre attract large numbers of visitors each year. The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens, restaurant, and Café also pulled in over 100,000 people in 2006.

The city is well served by several schools including a University campus and the area boasts many heritage buildings and sites of interest. From public buildings to a railways station, there is no shortage of places to visit in Port Augusta.
