History

Colonel William Light explored the area in 1836. Port Adelaide was effectively founded in 1837. Governor George Gawler chose the exact location of the local wharf in 1840. Construction of the wharf finished later in the same year.

The port thrived from 1841 to 1970. More wharves sprang up to meet the shipping demands. Outer Harbour was built in the early 20th century. Port Adelaide’s original wharves came down in the 1920s and 1930s. The area’s economy dipped between 1970 and 2010, but has resurged since.
