History

Pooraka was originally called Dry Creek. However, little is known about its history. In 1916, the District Council of Yatala changed the suburb’s name to Pooraka. In 1965, Pooraka East Post Office opened. This closed in 1986.

The origin of the name “Pooraka” is unknown. The District Council of Yatala believed it was a native Kaurna word that means “dry creek”. However, this appears to be untrue. The word is also an indigenous NSW name for “turpentine tree”.
