Welcome to Peterborough, SA
Peterborough is a town in South Australia. It’s situated off the Barrier Highway, some 220km north of Adelaide. Peterborough is the council seat of the District Council of Peterborough, and has a population of more than 1,400.
History
Established as a town in 1879, Peterborough was first known as Petersburg. The name was changed in 1917, as part of an initiative to change Germanic place names due to the ongoing Great War. For a century, Peterborough was one of Australia’s most important railway towns. It sat at a central junction, with freight and passengers passing through from all corners of the country. Although this has largely ceased since the 1980s, Peterborough still thrives as a historic tourist hotspot.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Peterborough is known for its many attractions based around the old railway industry. The Heritage Rail Trail is a great trek, and the Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre is an award-winning museum showcasing the town’s history. It features a spectacular light and sound show that draws in thousands of visitors. Nature lovers should check out Dragons Rest Habitat Garden and the Greg Duggan Nature Reserve & Lookout.
