Based in South Australia, Penola is a beautiful town. It lies 338km southeast of Adelaide and sits in the Coonawarra region. According to the 2006 census, Penola has a population of 1,317 people.
History
In 1840, the Austin brothers arrived in the area. However, it wasn’t until 1844 that Penola saw its first permanent settlers. These were Alexander Cameron and his wife, Margaret. Six years later, in 1950, Cameron acquired 80 acres of freehold land. He established the town of Panoola, which would be later known as Penola.
In 1850, Camera built the Royal Oak Hotel. In 1852, the area gained its first post office. Penola finally gained township status in 1867.
