History
Following the purchase of Oaklands in 1906 by Thomas Currie Tait for £15,000, he then offered land to the South Australian Government for £100 per acre in 1923. Following a refusal of this offer, the land was sold to businesses for agricultural and building purposes.
By 1925 as gum trees were being uprooted to allow for the construction of Housing Trust homes, a residents group was formed to try and preserve some of the remaining trees. They were successful in planting and nurturing 12oo native trees and a shrubbery. This group was also involved in ensuring that a large portion of what is now council-managed land was gazetted for recreational use.
