Mt Barker is a suburb of Adelaide located 33 km east of the CBD.

Mt Barker lies at the base of a local mountain of the same name, called the Mt Barker summit by locals. The eponymous Mt Barker itself was first sighted by Captain Charles Sturt in 1830, who thought at the time that he was looking at the already discovered Mt Lofty. Captain Collet Barker corrected this error when he surveyed the area in 1831. Sturt then named the mountain in honour of Captain Barker after he was killed later that year by Aborigines, at the Murray Mouth.

Mt Barker is the largest town in the Adelaide Hills, and is one of the fastest growing areas in the state. Mt Barker is quite close to Adelaide and many residents commute between the two for work on a daily basis. Conversely, however, it is far enough away from the city that Adelaide residents will generally refer to it as “the country”. Mt Barker has a growing economy with new shopping centres and other businesses, as well as a growing population.
