Morphettville has a population of 3,000 people and is a suburb in Adelaide, SA.

History

It was named after one of the area’s early settlers, Sir John Morphett. Born in London in 1809, he made the journey to Australia in 1836. He played an important role in selecting the location of Port Adelaide to be the capital.

The mainly residential town of Morphettville is linked to the city by the Glenelg Tram Line. Originally constructed in 1873 the line has seen many changes and upgrades. Most recently it has been refurbished as part of an Adelaide wide regeneration scheme.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

As well as having good transport links to the city centre, Morphettville is a destination in its own right.

It is home to the Morphettville Racecourse, established in 1876. It is South Australia’s premier horse racing track.
