History

The suburb grew from a small ribbon style development that provided services for travellers between Athelstone and Adelaide city. Marden has a reputation for market gardening which is cultivated on the flat areas adjacent to its boundaries with the River Torrens.

Most of the existing development in the area was fully completed in the twenty years or so following the end of World War Two. This is why there are still many older buildings in the suburb. The south area of Marden around Broad Street was however developed as units and flats.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

The area has several schools, churches, and the Payneham Swimming Pool provides for fitness and leisure in the suburb. The Temple Marden Shopping Centre is home to a range of shops and other facilities.
