Mannum is a historic town in South Australia, 84km east of Adelaide, and is located on the west bank of the Murray River. It is the seat of the Mid Murray Council and has a population of over 2,100.
History
The traditional owners were the Nganguruku people, who are part of the larger Ngayawung community.
Charles Sturt led an expedition through the area by boat in 1830, but no Europeans visited again until 1838. Europeans first settled in the area in 1840.
The first ship built on the Murray River was launched at Mannum in 1852 by William Randell. Until the 20th century, shipbuilding was an important industry in Mannum.
Lifestyle and Entertainment
Mannum is home to the Roos, an Australian Rules Football team that competes in the River Murray Football League. The Mannum Rowing Club hosts the Mannum Regatta and the Arnold Cup every year.
During the summer, water sports are very popular in the town.
