Based in South Australia, Mallala is a small town. It lies 58km north of Adelaide and has a population of 737 people.

History

Historians believe that the name “Mallala” comes from the local Aboriginal word “madlola”. This is thought to mean “place of the ground frog”.

Mallala achieved township status in 1840. The first settler in the area of Phillip Butler, who took up a sheep run. By the 1860s, Mallala saw a large number of sheep and wheat farmers. Although the town thrived, it did not experience any real growth.

The Royal Australian Air Force established the RAAF Base Mallala in 1939. RAAF pilots were trained in this facility until it was closed in 1960.

Lifestyle and Entertainment

Mallala remains a quiet town that holds onto its 19th century charm. At the interaction of eight roads, a World War I memorial stands in tribute to fallen soldiers. The plaque on the memorial says, “In honour of ten men who died in defence of home and liberty.”
