Lobethal is a town in South Australia. It sits in the Adelaide Hills, and forms part of the Adelaide Hills local government area. Lobethal is 42km east of Adelaide, and has a population of over 2,000.

History

Founded in 1842, Lobethal was home to a group of Prussian immigrants who came to Australia aboard the Skjold. They built St John’s Lutheran Church, which still stands as the country’s oldest Lutheran church. Lobethal developed a thriving wool industry, which was central to the town’s economy until the 1950s. In 1917, Lobethal became ‘Tweedvale’. This was due to a country-wide movement to change Germanic place names in response to the First World War. The name was changed back in 1935.

Lobethal is a picturesque town that still retains many of its old Pufendorf-style cottages. The Rising Sun Hotel, Lobethal Bierhaus and Amberlight Deli & Snack Bar provide quality dining, and the art gallery at the old wool mill always has something going on. Lobethal is famous for its extravagant Christmas light displays, which bring in thousands of visitors from all across the state.
